Indiana State Bar’s Mentor Match program wins national award

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 9, 2012) – The Indiana State Bar Association Professional Legal Education Admission & Development Section (PLEADS) has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award from the American Bar Association (ABA) Standing Committee on Professionalism for its statewide Mentor Match program. The award and cash prize were presented at the ABA’s annual meeting in Chicago on Aug. 3.

"For many young lawyers, the Mentor Match program has inspired them to develop their professional and personal skills through service to others," said ISBA President C. Erik Chickedantz of Fort Wayne. "The mentors and mentees that participate are truly the 'cream of the crop,' and I have no doubt that the State Bar's visionary approach on mentoring will become a model for other states."

Launched in 2010, the ISBA’s Mentor Match program supports new lawyers transitioning into the practice of law and covers topics such as personal and professional development, ethics, law office management, and client communication, advocacy and negotiation. The award recognized specific efforts to collaborate with the Indiana Supreme Court Commission on Continuing Legal Education to provide CLE credits to both the participating mentor and mentee.

“Indiana’s tenacious commitment to making mentoring work reflects its commitment to the professional development of young lawyers and may serve as a model for other states,” said Chair Dennis R. Honabach, ABA Standing Committee on Professionalism.
